Convenant House - Youth Supports, Anchorage
- Shelter , hot food, a shower, clean clothes, warm bed, and immediate medical attention youth might need - Place Is open all year round - Help youth from 13-20 - Help younger youth (13-17) and family –hopefully to go back home. If not an option, work with family to find a safe alternative placement for the youth - Work with older youth (18-20) with education, employment and stable place for living arrangements. - Work closely with covenant house programs - Open intake meaning they are ALWAYS open to youth. They never tell youth they have no room or tell them to come back later. - Youth are welcome even after they discharge. - Focuses mainly on youth for the programs. No one is forces them. The staff works with them to developing relationships of TRUST that build on their desire to make positive changes in youth’s life. - Provides health services. The nurse practitioner is on call 24 hours a day. Walk ins are acceptable and medical services are free of charge. M- F 1-5 at Youth Resource Center. - Fun activities that are physical and emotional energy. 2. Transitional Living Program - Stable and safe living environment in a residential setting. - Help homeless youth successful transition to independent living and self-sufficiency. - Promotes youth development, focusing on providing youth with opportunities to build leadership skills, and become more involved in their communities. - They have 2 sites in Anchorage one is the Rights of Passage that serves homeless youth 18-20 and the other is Passage House that serve parenting and pregnant young women 17-20 and their children. - Volunteers and mentors are key element to Transitional Living Program to program and success of their youth. Mentors provide positive role models as they interact with resident youth. 3. Pastoral Ministry - Ministry to the youth is an integral part of mission at Covy. - Must sever the spiritual needs in addition to the physical needs, - Aims to help youth find answers to questions through educational, listening, discussing values, guidance, and patience. - Encourages all youth to explore the concepts of faith and spirituality in own life. - Provides opportunity to ask questions and find answers in a way that is meaningful and challenging to them. - Help find ways that their faith can be used as a source of strength. - More information contact Edward McGourn, Pastoral Minister, at (907)339-4248 or email at emcgorn@covhouse.alaska.com
4. Community Service Center - Committed to helping youth by providing both support to leave the streets and support to remain in a safe environment, depending on their situation. - Services include ( but not limited to) family mediation, counseling referrals, job search assistance and employment referrals, free medical, clinic, educational assistance, life skills workshops, emergency food, assistance to positive alternatives to risky behavior. - Counseling Services- There is variety of counseling services available at CSC for no charge. - Work hard to provide youth with services they need to stay safe. - Lead weekly groups on issues such as anger, drug and alcohol abuse, depression, relationship building, and crisis management, there is also a family advocate on site to provide mediation between youth and parents. - Educational programs- Through the child in transition and homeless program ASD provides teachers and tutors on site at CSC helping kids get back into school. - Legal Street- The 1st and 3rd Tuesday if each month at 4:30 the Advocacy Department informational Legal Clinic for youth at CSC - Open to all youth in Anchorage community- Alaska Legal Services Address legal questions by youth on civil topics, such as landlord-tenant law, automobile sales, truth in lending, domestic relation, child support, enforcement, and child custody.- Youth with questions or legal entanglements are encouraged to attend

5. Job Development - Help youth find jobs and to maintain employment and attain educational and professional goals.- I.e. GED pre testing, educational and work skills assessment, career interest surveys, job search assistance and computer skills training and enhancement are among services the Job development staff provide. - GED pre testing- Focuses on 5 areas. The Language arts, Reading, Social Studies, Science, and Math. - Work with staff to improve youth skills and test scores. - Educational and Work Skills Assessment - Work with the youth to identify specific areas that need improvement - I.e. academic subjects, computer literacy, or self management in the workplace. - Youth work to develop and improve strategies for improvement - Career Interest Surveys - Encourage youth to take Alaska Career interest systems survey is a tool that evaluates individual strengths and career preferences. - Powerful tool to help youth set immediate and long term career goals - Job search assistance - Covy youth participate in pre- employment workshops that highlight topics in job hunting strategies, application guidelines, interviewing skills, professional attire, self-management techniques and conflict resolution. - Computer Skills and Training and Enhancement - Job development staff members assist youth in acquiring computer skills needed to become viable job candidates in today’s competitive marketplace. - Provides training in basic navigation, Microsoft word, excel, and access. - More information contact David Nolta, Community Service Center Coordinator, at (907)339-4431 or email at dnolta@covhouse.alaska.com |
