No evidence that universal screening of kids for substance abuse or depression is cost effective or benefical.
Evidence based screens are not specific or sensitive for adolescents. Produce lost of false positives and negatives.
Confusiuon in the studies about what constitutes alcohol abuse.
Social skill building is more effective than information or "scaring kids straight."
Reductions in drinking may be inaccurately attributed to treatment.
Deprssion may be result of actual life stressors. Helping relieve these stressors may be best approach for some, especially those in poverty.
Treatment of other life problems improves outcomes for problem drinkers.
Treating mental disorders improves outcomes for substance abusers.
