The National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse, the nation's first national consumer technical assistance center, has played a major role in the development of the mental health consumer movement. The consumer movement strives for dignity, respect, and opportunity for those with mental illnesses. Consumers--those who receive or have received mental health services--continue to reject the label of "those who cannot help themselves."

Each family network assures that when a parent, grandparent, foster parent or youth makes a call to a network, the person who answers the phone has first-hand knowledge of the challenges of raising a child with an emotional or behavioral challenge. They know the resources for help in their state.

The Legal Center for Foster Care and Education has released a new
publication, Solving the Data Puzzle: A How-To Guide on Collecting and
Sharing Information to Improve Educational Outcomes for Children in
Out-of-Home Care. This How-To Guide is divided into two sections: a
Manual and Tools. The Manual provides details on relevant legal and
policy considerations, as well as examples from around the country
engaging in this important work. The Tools provide checklists to guide
education and child welfare agencies in collaboration.

Transforming Childrens Mental Health Care in Indian Country

Since the mid-1990's a total of 27 American Indians/Alaska Native and urban Indian communities have experienced positive outcomes at all levels in both planning and implementing a system of care approach. Since the work is funded by the Center for Mental Health Services and is written as specifically for children with severe emotional disturbance, the lead programs in these efforts tend to be the tribal childrens mental health programs.
